The Benagil Cave will reopen in 2022, and here's everything you need to know.

The Benagil Cave, also known as the Algar de Benagil or the Benagil Sanctuary, is one of the most loved grottoes in Portugal along the stunning Algarve coastline. It is liked so much because of its distinctive rock growth, which floods the light through an opening in the roof called the 'eye.' This completely natural skylight produces the most magical setup. However, there is a catch: not every visitor to the site is allowed to enter the Benagil Cave.

About benagil cave

The Benagil Cave is named after the fishing town of Benagil, which is located in the middle of the southern Portuguese coastline in the Algarve region. There are many other sea caves and notable rock formations along this stretch of the Algarve coast, particularly between the cities of Albufeira and Lagos, which is best the best option for the Benagil Sea Cave Tour.

How to visit the benagil cave

There are many ways to visit the Benagil Cave, from casual to adventurous. Importantly, not all visitors have the chance to access the small beach inside the Benagil Cave. As unfair as this may sound, it comes down to your health and fitness level.

Here is a complete guide to visiting the Benagil Cave and the benefits and drawbacks.

It lets you peek inside the cave from behind the fence. It does not give you access to this Algarve cave beach.

You can reach the Benagil sea cave by water. Nevertheless, if you want to see the beautiful cave or explore this natural wonder from a different perspective, you can do so from the top of the cliff. The Benagil beach is about a 5-minute walk away (Praia de Benagil). For safety and security reasons, the eye of the high ridge has been fenced off.

While checking out the Benagil Cave by watercraft, you will stay in this fascinating cave for 2 minutes. Guests of the Benagil Cave Tours are not allowed to disembark.

Several boats in all shapes and sizes supply watercraft tours to the popular Benagil Cave. Yet one thing to note is that not all of them can enter the cave. So, choose a small watercraft to enter the low cave.

Boat tours to the Benagil Cave are regulated during the peak season. Normally, when you choose to see the Benagil Grotto by watercraft, you can stay inside the cave for only a few minutes. But don't worry as there are many more beautiful caves you will visit as part of your little boat scenic tour. Getting off the boat is not allowed inside the Benagil cave.

Most Benagil Cavern boat tours take anywhere between 1 to 3 hours, depending on the number of other Algarve caves you'll visit on that particular watercraft scenic tour and where you'll be boarding. You can start your boat trip from various Algarve beaches and marinas such as Benagil beach (possibly a fisherman's watercraft), Valle de Centenas beach, Armacao de Pura, Ferragudo, Carvoeiro, Portimao, Faro, or Lagos, Portugal.
